One of the questions I get from many people is, “How did you get involved with concrete countertops?”
My mother had wanted concrete countertops for 15 years. When I first heard her say that, I was skeptical yet intrigued by the idea. As I started looking into some of the things that people were doing with concrete I was surprised and a little shocked. I loved some of the shapes and designs that I was seeing in magazines and on TV. They were doing so much more with concrete than most would people think; countertops, shower surrounds, fireplace surrounds, outdoor kitchens, etc. I knew then this was something I had to become involved with.
I have been working around concrete since childhood with my father; from mixing a small batch in a wheelbarrow for a new piece of sidewalk to 20-foot retaining walls needing the use of a mixing truck and batch plant. In the most recent years, I have done a lot of finishing work in areas as building homes and doing remodels, and always been disappointed in the lack of choices with most products. Laminate countertops and even solid surface countertops, similar to Corian, all seem to look the same unless you go with a bizarre color that most of us would not have in our homes. Every product that we make is a custom piece that you will never recreate the same again. I love the creativity of these products that even though someone else may use the same colors as we do we get a very different look because each piece is hand crafted to our designs. Not only are we creating colors and patterns that most people have never seen before but we are able to put textures to these colors. With the concrete that we use in our products, we are getting more strength and beauty than ever before.
Another thing I see more and more of is a goal of going “GREEN.” I like the choice of concrete because many of the ingredients used in the makeup of concrete are renewable resources. You may say how is that possible, but the simple fact is that the metal reinforcing that we use is recyclable and so is the solid concrete that can be crushed and reused in other concrete products.
It all comes down to this; I love to create with my hands, with a product that most people normally consider ugly. You start out with a substance that resembles oatmeal and a day later, you have a solid, almost stone product, which resembles what ever you have created, and have to admit that it does not look like concrete at all. Come look at some of these products and get a feel for them yourself. You will be amazed at the beauty created out of concrete.
Thank You
